NYC bans ChatGPT from schools

The New York City Department of Education has banned students and teachers from accessing the ChatGPT chatbot on the city's public school networks and devices. Individual schools may request access to ChatGPT to study AI, reports Vice.

“While the tool can provide quick and simple answers to questions, it does not develop the critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are essential for academic and lifelong success,” said Education Department spokeswoman Jenna Lyle.

ChatGPT was developed and released in November 2022 by OpenAI. Almost immediately after the launch, the administration of the Stack Overflow forum temporarily banned the posting of answers generated by ChatGPT. The reason is that the bot often gave answers that looked like the right ones, but were misleading.

In December, Tinder users revealed how they use ChatGPT to communicate. The chatbot helps users to search for matches and write messages. When there is a match, users prompt ChatGPT to write a message to start a conversation based on the other party's interests and hobbies. They then send it to their match.

In March 2023, Microsoft will launch an AI companies version of its Bing search engine powered by the ChatGPT chatbot.
