SEO for an experience‑gifts aggregator website
About the project
This case study demonstrates how systematic SEO for a gift card aggregator can scale traffic and visibility in a highly competitive niche. We focused on comprehensive semantic coverage, a logical site structure, and strengthening domain authority, all while prioritizing conversion rates. The result: a significant increase in traffic and key search queries over two years.
Objectives
- Capture traffic for target keyword clusters
- Generate inquiries for priority gifts
- Audit and improve the site’s technical SEO
- Optimize category and product page structures for higher conversion
- Collect all relevant semantics and expand the site architecture
- Build and balance the backlink profile
Key challenges and strategy
In this niche, the winning play is breadth: create dedicated pages for every viable query cluster. There are roughly 80–100 recurring clusters like “gift for sister” or “Valentine’s Day,” plus queries for specific experiences such as “book rafting” or “book a mountain tour.”
- Core plan: collect as many high‑volume, relevant queries as possible, create dedicated pages, connect them with smart internal linking, fill them with the right content and products, and strengthen them with quality backlinks.
- Technical SEO was critical: fix errors, improve load speed, remove duplicates, and boost indexation.
- Conversion work mattered just as much: intuitive filters, relevant landing pages, clear service descriptions, and a transparent flow for ordering and buying certificates.
What we did
Semantics
- The semantic layer is simple at first glance but very diverse in practice. We identified marker words to uncover extra clusters competitors were missing, then ran a thorough competitor analysis. By unifying the best parts of different site structures, we built a comprehensive list of all potential pages.
- Precise naming and descriptions of gifts/experiences were essential because a large share of traffic lands on product cards.
- Since the site operates nationwide, we had to avoid duplicate products across cities. For example, horseback riding can exist in many cities. We made the city explicit for both users and search engines via city pages and proper copy/meta tags.
Content
- Beyond keyword‑informed copy, we optimized on‑page elements: tagging of gift cards, clear product names, and strong preview cards.
- We prioritized the structure of gift descriptions and product previews, which reduced the need to write long texts for every page and let us reallocate budget to link building.
- Where content was indispensable (high‑volume, high‑competition queries), we created pages modeled on the best‑performing content in the niche in terms of length, structure, and keyword placement.
Site architecture expansion
We used two main semantic sources:
- General intent clusters (e.g., “gift for girlfriend,” “gift for mom”)
- Specific gift types (the names of the experiences themselves)
- Many service providers don’t have their own sites, so ranking in the regional top 5 for certain queries was attainable.
- We split relevant semantics into two buckets: intent/recipient‑based and gift‑type‑based.
Backlink profile
- We analyzed our and top competitors’ links and established target ratios for anchor vs. non‑anchor, editorial vs. crowd, and follow vs. nofollow links. Based on this, we set the budget and acquisition plan.
- This niche naturally earns forum links, so we leaned on high‑quality forum placements for volume, reserving anchored editorial links for the most frequent and highest‑priority keywords.
- We prioritized the highest‑quality referring domains.
Results
- Visibility: 0.7 → 11.54 (+1,649%)
- Traffic: +489%
- Ranking keywords: 80,679 → 140,543 (+74%)
Conclusion
A systematic approach to semantics, a clear website architecture, relevant content, and a well-thought-out link-building strategy make it possible to aggressively grow organic traffic even in the highly competitive niche of gift experiences. Over the course of two years, we have scaled our search engine presence and achieved steady growth in targeted traffic and visibility across Ukraine.
